How to unlock LG Stylo 3 for free – MetroPCS, T-Mobile, Boost, Straight Talk

I got my LG Stylo 3 Plus MetroPCS unlocked for free without using any unlock code or unlock tool. Beware of websites who sell fake unlock tools with a claim to unlock your phone.

LG Stylo 3 is sold by almost every prepaid carrier in the USA including MetroPCS, T-Mobile, Cricket, Boost, Straight Talk etc. The method of unlocking varies for each and every carrier.

For example, none of the Stylo 3 variants can be unlocked with an unlock code except, Cricket. Prepaid phones of MetroPCS/T-Mobile have a device unlock app pre-installed through which I got my Stylo 3 plus unlocked.

Let’s check out the unlocking procedure for MetroPCS / T-Mobile and later on we would find out ways of unlocking Stylo 3 by Boost Mobile, Cricket & Straight Talk.

How to unlock LG Stylo 3 Plus MetroPCS / T-Mobile via Device Unlock App

I purchased a New LG Stylo 3 Plus MetroPCS MP450 from eBay and following the below procedure I was able to unlock it for free. You can give it a try if it doesn’t work then there is a paid solution to get your phone unlocked.

On your LG Stylo 3 Plus Home Screen, look for “MetroPCS” and open it.

Now click on “Device Unlock” to run it.

Tap on “ALLOW” to accept the app permission request

Now, Tap on continue to proceed with the unlocking.

The app would connect to the server so it would require a data connection. Wifi is fine, cellular data is not mandatory.

Finally, click “Permanent Unlock” to permanently unlock your Stylo 3 Plus for all the GSM networks worldwide.

You can see, my unlock request got approved and after this only a Restart is needed to use the Stylo 3 Plus with other GSM carriers such as AT&T, Cricket, Straight Talk etc

If the above method doesn’t work for you, then you need to purchase LG Stylo 3 Plus MetroPCS/T-Mobile remote unlock service from eBay it starts from around $14 as of now.

LG Stylo 3 Plus USB Debugging, Developer Options & OEM Unlock – How to Enable

LG Stylo 3 Plus is one of the few LG android phones with an unlockable bootloader. With an unlocked bootloader, we can easily root our Stylo 3 plus, flash a custom recovery (TWRP) & install a Custom ROM.

However, in order to unlock the bootloader, we need to Enable USB Debugging & OEM Unlock. Both of these options are found within the “Developer Options”. Let’s check out how to do this with the help of the following screenshots.

How to Enable Developer Options & USB Debugging on LG Stylo 3 Plus MetroPCS MP450 & T Mobile TP450

“Developer Options” is meant for developers and is kept hidden since Android Lollipop 5.1

We can unhide it quite easily on our Stylo 3 Plus.

Open Settings and tap on the “General” Tab. Now scroll down towards the bottom of the screen.

Click on “About Phone” to open it as shown above.

In “About Phone”, we’ve to open “Software Info”

You would notice the second last option is “Build Number”

We’ve to tap on Build Number 7 times to Enable Developer Options.

Once done a pop-up would appear for a moment “You are now a developer!”.

Now go 2 steps back to the Main settings page.

This time you would notice above “About Phone” a new option is visible i.e “Developer Options”.

Tap on it to open.  Accept the warning an proceed by clicking “OK”

Now scroll down to “USB Debugging” and tap on it to turn it ON.

Similarly, we’ve to turn ON “Enable OEM Unlock” in order to unlock the LG Stylo 3 Plus Bootloader.

In this post, we’re going to download and install the latest Windows 10 (& MAC) drivers for LG Stylo 3 Plus MetroPCS MP450 & T-Mobile TP450.

While using the LG Stylo 3 Plus, every now and then we need to connect it to the computer and driver installation is necessary for various modes of USB connection.

We need to install LG MTP drivers for file transfer between phone & PC, LG ADB drivers for Fastboot Mode & LG Serial Port Driver for doing a Firmware update in the Download Mode.

First of all, we’re going to install the latest LG Mobile Driver using the setup file on our computer. You can download the file from the below link –

For Mac (LG Mobile Driver v5.4) follow the below Link –

Click on the Setup file “LGMobileDriver_WHQL_Ver_4.2.0.exe” to start the USB driver installation.

We’ve to complete the InstallShield wizard by following step by step instructions as shown above.

Wait for the installation to complete.

The driver has installed successfully.

Now we’re ready to connect our LG Stylo 3 Plus to the computer.

In this post, we’re going to install LG Stylo 3 drivers for 3 different modes of USB connection which are –

  1. ADB Driver installation when connected in Fastboot Mode
  2. USB Modem & Serial Port Driver Installation when connected in Download Mode
  3. MTP Driver installation when Stylo 3 is connected in File Transfer mode

Let’s start with the installation of ADB Interface Driver. Many users face issue while installing this driver.

1. LG Stylo 3 Plus ADB Interface Driver Installation for Fastboot Mode

First of all, we are going to Enable the Developer Options which is hidden by default.

Go to Settings < About Phone < Build Number

Tap 7 times on Build Number to unhide “Developer Options”

Now go 2 steps back.  Above “About Phone” you’ll find “Developer Options”.

Open “Developer Options”. Now scroll down and look for USB Debugging.

Turn it ON by accepting the warning pop-up.

Now connect your Stylo 3 Plus to the computer.

The USB connection mode can be set to “Charging” or “File Transfer”

Wait for the ADB Interface driver to install on its own.

LGE Mobile ADB Interface driver is installed successfully.

Download and install the “Minimal ADB and Fastboot” program on your computer.

As the name suggests, this program eliminates the need to download the whole Android SDK package to connect the phone in ADB mode.  Thanks to shimp208@xda for creating this awesome software.

Run Minimal ADB and Fastboot program. It would launch the cmd command prompt window.

If LG Stylo 3 Plus ADB Interface driver is not installed successfully we cannot write any command in the cmd  Window. It would display a message “waiting for device”

Type adb devices and hit Enter on your computer keyboard

You can see our phone model is detected as LGMP450 under the “List of devices attached”

However, you can notice the connected device is “unauthorized”

If at this point, you’ll look at your phone screen there must be a pop-up asking for authorization to Allow USB Debugging.

Tap “OK” to Allow USB Debugging.

Now again type adb devices and hit Enter

Now, the computer is authorized and we can write a command to boot the phone in the fastboot mode.

To enter fastboot, type adb reboot bootloader and hit Enter

Your Stylo 3 Plus must be now in Fastboot Mode a shown above.

Once again we’ve to install the ADB Interface Driver in the fastboot mode.

Wait for the driver to install.

You can see in Device Manager, the driver installation has failed.

If same is the case with you, then follow the below steps to manually install the ADB Interface Driver.

Open Device Manager.

Under “Other Devices” you’ll find “Android” with an exclamation mark

Right Click on it and select “Update Driver Software”

Now tap on “Browse my computer for driver software”

Click on “Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer”

You can see “ADB Interface” under the list of hardware devices, select it an click “Next”

Now select the Manufacturer i.e Google or Samsung

Even if we install the ADB interface driver from Samsung it would work.

I’ve selected Google Inc as shown above.

Under “Model” select “LGE Mobile Sooner Single ADB Interface” and click Next.

Accept the installation warning by tapping on “Yes”

The driver installation is successful.

The ADB Interface driver is now visible in the “Device Manager”.

Now we’re ready to unlock the LG Stylo 3 Plus Bootloader.

LG Stylo 3 Plus Download Mode & Recovery Mode MP450 / TP450

The 2 most significant modes of troubleshooting on LG Stylo 3 Plus are Recovery Mode & Download Mode.

As the name suggests, recovery mode is useful is recovering our Stylo 3 Plus if acting abnormally or not booting at all. Recovery Mode is a separate partition so even if the phone is not booting to the Home screen we can still access the recovery mode. We can perform factory data reset / hard reset via recovery mode.

Download Mode offers a higher level of troubleshooting as compared to recovery mode. In recovery mode, we can only perform a factory data reset. However, if the problem is severe and boot partition is affected then download mode comes to rescue. Download Mode can be used to flash a stock Stylo 3 Plus firmware to restore the boot partition thus unbricking the phone to working state.

Let’s check out how to get the most out of these modes of troubleshooting –

How to boot LG Stylo 3 Plus MP450 & TP450 into Download Mode

Before booting our Stylo 3 Plus into Download mode, we need to install LG USB Driver on our computer. If you’ve not yet installed the LG driver download the setup file from the below link –

Click on the downloaded exe file i.e “LGMobileDriver_WHQL_Ver_4.2.0.exe” to run the setup wizard.

Complete the driver installation by following the InstallShield wizard as shown above.

Once the driver installation is complete we’re ready to connect the phone to PC in Download Mode.

To Enter Download mode –

Power OFF your Stylo 3 Plus

Connect one end of a USB data cable to your phone. Now press the Volume UP key as shown above

Keep the Volume UP button pressed and connect the other end of the USB data cable to the computer.

Your Stylo 3 Plus must be now in the Download Mode.

Download Mode is the black Firmware Update screen as shown above.
